In the first game of the three game series between the Angels and the Tigers, Detroit played their worst defensive game of the year, making six errors. Rick Porcello had another shaky outing getting his fifth loss of the season. Porcello went 4-1/3 innings while giving up seven runs on ten hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Darin Downs took over on the mound and lasted a whole 1/3 of an inning while giving up three runs on three hits and one walk. Evan Reed was not much better, going 2-2/3 innings while giving up four runs on one hit, two walks and two strikeouts. Luke Putkonen was given the ball next and threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up no runs on two hits and one K. Phil Coke finished the game with one scoreless inning with one walk and two strikeouts. C.J. Wilson got the start and the win for the Angels, his seventh of the season, going five innings while giving up five runs on seven hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Three relievers finished the game for LA going a combined four innings while giving up three runs on three hits and two walks. Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez led the offense with Cabrera going 1-4 with a homerun and two RBI’s and Martinez going 1-4 with two RBI’s. Austin Jackson was 1-3 with one RBI, Ramon Santiago drew a bases loaded walk to earn an RBI, Prince Fielder was 1-4 with a double and one RBI and Don Kelly drove in one run with a sac fly. Torii Hunter had three hits while Andy Dirks, Omar Infante and Avisail Garcia each had one hit. Cabrera and Reed each had two errors while Hunter and Bryan Holaday each had one apiece. The Tigers collected ten hits four walks and left six men on base.
Wednesday 6/26/13 LA Angels-7 Detroit-4
In the second game of the series, Detroit was trying to bounce back after the horrible game on Tuesday but came up short. Jose Alverez took the loss, his first of the season, going 5-2/3 innings while giving up four runs on seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Drew Smyly came next and gave up three runs on two hits, two walks and one K in 1-1/3 innings of work. Al Alburquerque and Luke Putkonen finished the game each pitching a scoreless inning giving up one hit and fanning three. Billy Buckner got the start for the Angels lasting three innings while giving up three runs on seven hits and one walk but did not get a decision. Dana De La Rosa got the win, his second win of the season, going two scoreless innings while giving up one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Three relievers combined to go three innings while giving up one run on three hits and two strikeouts. Ernesto Frieri earned his 18th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning while giving up one hit and fanning one. Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera led the offense with Hunter going 2-5 with a double and a solo homerun and Cabrera going 2-4 with a solo homerun. Prince Fielder was 2-4 with a double and one RBI, Brayan Pena had two hits while Austin Jackson, Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta and Andy Dirks each had one hit. Miguel Cabrera made an error, his ninth of the season. The Tigers collected twelve hits, two walks and left seven men on base.
Thursday 6/27/13 LA Angels-3 Detroit-1 (10 Innings)
In the third game of the series the Tigers were trying not to be swept, not just for this series but the season series as well. Unfortunately they were unsuccessful losing in ten innings to the Angels. Doug Fister got the start for the Tigers going seven innings while giving up one run on seven hits, one walk and four strikeouts but did not factor in the decision. Al Alburquerque and Joaquin Benoit each threw a scoreless inning giving up a combined one hit, two walks and three strikeouts. Phil Coke game on in the tenth and was saddled with the loss, his fifth of the season, he gave up two runs on three hits and one walk in 1/3 of an inning. Luke Putkonen finished the game getting out both batters he faced. Brayan Pena drove in the only run of the game for the Tigers going 2-4. Jhonny Peralta had two hits while Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Omar Infante each had one hit. The Tigers collected seven hits, two walks, one hit batsman and left seven men on base.
Friday 6/28/13 Detroit-6 Tampa Bay-3
After being swept in the season series by the Angels, the Tigers were glad to see them go, and traveled to Tampa to face the Rays in a three game series. In game one the Tigers sent undefeated Max Scherzer to the mound as the Rays countered with Alex Colome. Scherzer stayed perfect earning his twelfth of the season, the first pitcher to start the season 12-0 since 1986 when Roger Clemens did it. He is also the only pitcher in the 113 year history of the Tigers to start the season 12-0. Scherzer went seven innings while giving up three runs on four hits, one walk and nine strikeouts. He also has the second longest streak in American League history with 16 games striking out at least six batters, the longest streak is held by Pedro Martinez with 29 in 2000. Al Alburquerque gave up one walk and two strikeouts in 2/3 of an inning of work while Drew Smyly fanned the only batter he faced. Joaquin Benoit recorded his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning were he gave up one hit and struck out two. Colome was saddled with his first loss of the season going six innings while giving up four runs on four hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Three relievers finished the game for the Rays going a combined three innings while giving up two runs on four hits, one walk and two K’s. Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder led the offense with Cabrera going 4-4 with a double, two homeruns and three RBI’s and Fielder going 2-3 with a double and a home run and two RBI’s. Don Kelly and Omar Infante had the only other Tiger hit of the game with each getting one hit. The Tigers collected eight hits, three walks, one hit batsman and left four men on base.
Saturday 6/29/13 Detroit-3 Tampa Bay-4 (10 Innings)
In the second game of the three game series the Tigers were trying to build on Max Scherzer’s twelfth win of the season but the bullpen was unable to get the win as the Tigers fell 3-4 in ten innings. Justin Verlander got the start and had a great outing, going eight innings while giving up three runs on nine hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Drew Smyly struck out the side in the ninth but Bruce Rondon got the loss, his first of the season giving up one run on three hits and one K. Chris Archer got the start for the Rays, going five innings while giving up three runs on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Alex Torres threw two scoreless innings while giving up one walk and striking out three and Joel Peralta gave up one hit in an inning of work. Former Tiger Fernando Rodney got the win, his third of the season, going two scoreless innings with two hits and two strikeouts. Austin Jackson and Jhonny Peralta drove in the three Tigers runs with Jackson going 1-3 with a solo homerun and Peralta going 1-5 with two RBI’s. Victor Martinez had three hits while Miguel Cabrera, Omar Infante and Bryan Pena each had one hit. Prince Fielder made an error his fourth of the season and the Tigers collected eight hits, four walks and left nine men on base. This was the Tigers ninth extra inning loss of the season, they have only won two extra inning games this season.
Sunday 6/30/13 Detroit-1 Tampa Bay-3
In the rubber game of the series between the Rays and Tigers, the Tigers sent Rick Porcello to the mound and theRays countered with Jeremy Hellickson. Porcello was saddled withthe loss, his sixth of the season, going six innings while giving up three runs on eight hits, two walksand three strikeouts. Phil Coke and Bruce Rondon each threw a scoreless inning giving up one hit and fanning one. Hellickson got the win, his seventh of the season going six innings while giving up one run on six hits, three walksand six strikeouts. Three Rays relievers combined to go two perfect innings strikeing out one. Fernando Rodney recorded his 17th save of the season giving up one hit in the ninth inning. Miguel Cabrera hit his 25th homerun of the season for the Tigers only run of the game. Omar Infante had two hits, while Torii Hunter, Victor Martinez, Andy Dirks and Bryan Holaday each had one hit. The Tigers collected sevenhits, three walks and left eight men on base. This was the Tigers fifth loss in their last six games.
