Games 62 Through 67 of the 2013 Detroit Tigers Season

Tuesday 6/10/13 Detroit-2  Kansas City-3                 
On Tuesday the Tigers started a three game series against the Kansas City Royals.  In game one the Royals sent Jeremy Guthrie to the mound and the Tigers countered with Doug Fister.  Fister took the loss, his fourth of the season, in a game where the only scoring for both teams happened in the third innings.  Fister threw a complete game giving up three runs on nine hits, zero walks and three strikeouts.  Guthrie earned his seventh win of the season going 6-1/3 innings while giving up two runs on six hits, three walks and no strikeouts.  Three Royal’s relievers combined to go 1-2/3 scoreless innings giving up one hit and fanning one.  Greg Holland earned his13th save of the season with a perfect ninth where he struck out two.  Miguel Cabrera drove in both Tigers runs with a third inning two run homer, his 18th of the season.  Torii Hunter had two hits while Andy Dirks, Jhonny Peralta, Omar Infante, Avisail Garcia each had one hit as the Tigers collected seven hits, three walks, one hit batsman and left eight men on base.                  


Wednesday 6/11/13 Detroit-3  Kansas City-2
 The second game of this series was very similar to the first just the opposite outcome.  This time the Royals started Wade Davis and the Tigers started Max Scherzer.  Scherzer got the win, his ninth of the season, to remain perfect on the year.  Scherzer went seven innings while giving up two runs on three hits, two walks and six strikeouts.  Joaquin Benoit pitched a scoreless eighth inning, giving up one hit and striking out two.  Jose Valverde got his ninth save of the season with a scoreless ninth where he surrendered one hit and fanned one.  Davis went 6-2/3 innings for the Royals, giving up two runs on eight hits, one walk and five strikeouts.  Tim Collins took over and did not record an out, giving up one hit and one walk.  Aaron Crow took the loss, his second of the season, giving up one run on one hit, one walk and one K, two other Kansas City pitchers threw a combined 1-1/3 innings giving up one hit and one walk.  Andy Dirks was 1-3 with one RBI, Victor Martinez was 1-3 with one RBI and Don Kelly was 2-2 with one RBI.  Omar Infante had three hits while Matt Tuiasosopo, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Avisail Garcia each had one hit.  The Tigers collected eleven hits, four walks, one hit batsman and left ten men on base.                         
   

Thursday 6/12/13 Detroit-2  Kansas City-3  (10 Innings)
The rubber game of this series had the same final score as the first two games but took ten innings to decide.  It featured a battle of aces, with Justin Verlander going against James Shields, neither pitcher factored into a decision as this one was decided by the bullpens.  Verlander went seven scoreless innings while giving up three hits, two walks and eight strikeouts.  Drew Smyly pitched the eighth inning and gave up one run on two hits.  At this point the Tigers were still leading by a 2-0 score.  Jose Valverde was brought in to save the game but blew his third save of the season, giving up a game tying two out homerun to Lorenzo Cain in 2/3 of an inning of work.  Phil Coke took the loss in the tenth, his fourth of the season with one inning where he gave up one run on two hits.  Shields, who the Tigers have hit well in past starts, got the nod for Kansas City going seven innings while giving up two runs on seven hits, two walks and six strikeouts.  Two relievers combined to go two scoreless innings for Kansas City, giving up two walks and fanning three.  Greg Holland got the win, his second of the season, going one perfect inning with two K’s.  Prince Fielder was 2-4 with one RBI and Brayan Pena was 2-4 with a double and one RBI, they were the only two Tigers to get more than one hit.  Avisail Garcia, Matt Tuiasosopo and Ramon Santiago each had one hit as the Tigers collected seven hits, four walks, one hit batsman and left eight men on base.         


Friday 6/14/13 Detroit-4  Minnesota-0
After the low scoring three game series in Kansas City, there were only 15 runs scored between the two teams, the Tigers traveled to Minnesota for a three game series against the Twins at Target Field.  Game one featured a battle between Rick Porcello and Scott Diamond.  Porcello got the win, his fourth win of the season, going seven scoreless innings while giving up three hits and fanning five.  Drew Smyly, Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde combined to finish the shutout, going two innings while giving up two walks and two K’s.  Scott Diamond took the loss, his sixth of the season, going 5-2/3 innings while giving up four runs on five hits, two walks and one K.  Three relievers combined to finish the game going 3-1/3 scoreless innings, giving up one walk and striking out three.  Only three Tigers had hits in the game, with Prince Fielder going 2-4 with two doubles and two RBI’s, Victor Martinez was 1-4 with one double and one RBI and Jhonny Peralta going 2-3 with two double, a walk and one RBI.  The five hits the Tigers had was their lowest output of the season.  They had three walks to go with the five hits and left four men on base.   


Saturday 6/15/13 Detroit-3  Minnesota-6
The second game of this series saw the Twins send Anibal Sanchez to the mound as the Twins countered with Samuel Deduno.  Sanchez had a short outing lasting only 3-2/3 innings before being pulled as a precaution.  Sanchez missed his previous start with shoulder tightness but both Sanchez and Jim Leyland said he was not feeling pain in the arm, just that the pitches weren’t working like they should.  In his 3-2/3 innings Sanchez gave up two runs on five hits, four walks and three strikeouts.  Darin Downs took over for Sanchez and took the loss, his second of the season, going 2-1/3 innings while surrendering three more runs, on five hits, no walks and four strikeouts.  Even Reed took the mound next going one inning, while giving up one run on three hits.  Luke Putkonen finished the game with one scoreless inning giving up one hit and fanning one.  Deduno got the win for the Twins, his third of the season, he went seven innings, while giving up two runs on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts.  Jared Burton gave up one run on one hit and a walk in one inning of work and Glen Perkins got his 16th save of the season with a perfect ninth where he fanned one batter.  Jhonny Peralta had a one out two run single in the top of the fourth for the Tigers only runs of the game.  Austin Jackson, just back from a rehab assignment in Toledo and Don Kelly each had two hits, while Miguel Cabrera had one hit.  The Tigers collected eight hits, two walks, one hit batsman and left six men on base.               


Sunday 6/16/13 Detroit-5   Minnesota-2
The rubber game of this series saw the Twins send P.J. Walter to the mound countered by Doug Fister.  Fister got the win, his sixth of the season, going 7-2/3 innings while giving up two runs on two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.  Fister had a no hitter through five innings before giving up a solo homerun to Brian Dozier to lead off the sixth inning.  Joaquin Benoit recorded his fourth save of the season, going 1-1/3 scoreless innings while giving up one hit and fanning one.  Walters took the loss for the Twins, his second of the season, going 5-1/3 innings while giving up four runs on nine hits, three walks and four strikeouts.  Three Minnesota relievers combined for 2-2/3 innings while giving up one run on two hits and five walks.  Torii Hunter and Austin Jackson led the offense with Hunter going 2-5 with a double, a homerun, his 300th and three RBI’s and Jackson going 2-5 with a homerun and two RBI’s.  Omar Infante and Alex Avila each had two hits, with Avila leaving the game after getting hit by a Brian Duensing pitch in the ninth inning.  Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez each had hits in the game as well.  The Tigers collected eleven hits, three walks and left seven men on base.
